Basic Steps to learn MySQL

Many website owners are unaware of the importance of database management. A database is simply an organized, structured collection of data.

MySQL is an open-source SQL database management system. Understand MySQL to be able to store and access content on your website using PHP.

To communicate with MySQL, you don’t need to be able to speak SQL. It is enough to be familiar with the software provided by your web host. This is usually phpMyAdmin.

Before You Begin

Experiential programmers may choose to use the SQL code directly from a shell prompt, or some other type of query window. It is a good idea to learn how to use phpMyAdmin.

It is the most widely used MySQL management program and most web hosts already have it. To find out how and where you can access it, contact your host. Before you can begin, you will need to know your MySQL login.

Make a Database

Create a Database. After that, you can add information. You can create a database using phpMyAdmin

  1. Log in to your account on your web hosting website.
  2. Click the phpMyAdmin icon to log in. It will be located in the root folder of your website.
  3. Look for the “Create a New Database” button on the screen.
  4. In the box provided, enter the database name and click to create.

Contact your host to create a database if the create database function is disabled. To create new databases, you must be granted permission. You will be taken to a screen from where you can create the database.

How to Create Tables

You can have multiple tables in your database. Each table is a grid containing information stored in the cells. You must create at LEAST one table in order to store data in your database.

In the area labeled “Create a new table on database [your_database_name],” enter a name (for example address_book) and type a number in the Fields cell. The columns called fields hold information.

These fields are used in the address_book example to hold the street address, first name, and last name. Enter the required number of fields if you are certain. If you don’t know the number of fields that you need, enter it. You can modify the number of fields later. Click To Go.

Next, you will need to enter a descriptive name and choose a data type. The most common types are text and number.

Data

Once you have created a database you can use phpMyAdmin to enter data directly into the fields. There are many ways to manage data in a table. This tutorial will show you how to edit, delete, search and modify data in your database.

Be a partner

MySQL is a relational database. This is the best thing about MySQL. The data in one table can be combined with data in another, provided they share one field. This is known as a Join and you can find out how to do it in this MySQL joins tutorial.

Working from PHP

After you have mastered the basics of SQL, you can use SQL to interact with your database. This allows your website’s content to be stored in your database and can be accessed dynamically by visitors or pages.
